BIKE TOUR SPAIN AND FRANCE 2011

Robin  left for  his second  big  bike adventure in Spain around the Sierra Nevada's and  continued into  France through the French Alps, finishing in Niece  just before the  famous Tour de France in June 2011. After many  hot  days  in Spain the French  mountain passes were difficult but views were magnificent. (Robin will send his report soon.)

Robin wore the King of the Mountain shirt one day and was the youngest of the bikers on  tour though very adventurous. France was cooler than Spain  though no less spectacular as the  snow tipped mountain  ( col ) passes were  sometimes hard to pedal up.  He climbed  2400 m and had a magnificent time doing  it too!  Shirleen rode along side in the support vehicle and kept photos up to date and  supported the rest of the team. They finished their time in Europe with a rest in Italy before heading back  to NZ in July.

THE BIG  BIKE TOUR 2010, Tanzania

Robin is back from a  biking tour starting in Kenya  with Global Adventures , Rob and Phil begin in Kenya, then to Tanzania and finish in Zanzibar!!   Read Robins report below.

''Recently I travelled to Tanzania with 24 other adventurers on a mountain bike tour. We started off with two safaris seeing the ‘’big five’’  ( being tigers, lions , elephants etc), and so much more in the Manyara and the

Ngorongoro Park that borders the Serengetti. (This part by 4WD).  We biked 580km and gained 7400m elevation on our journey that included going 3/4 the way around Mt Kilamanjaro and cycling up and through the

Usambara Mountains and out to Pagani on the Indian Ocean Coast. We then took an unforgettable boat trip across to the top end of Zanzibar and cycled down to Stone town the former capital of the slave trade.

What made it such an adventure for me ?  The fact it was a first time tour in Africa with all the elements of surprise that go with it, the other amazing people whom I got to know during the tough stages and the triumphant times,

we camped a lot of nights, we really saw the country in its natural state, we got to meet the locals including the Masaai people. The biking was challenging, being in a totally different environment , with people I didn’t know , all seeking adventure. "

Absolutely Awesome !

Above ............... Robin with  his hero, Steve Gurney previous Coast to Coast and   multi  sport  events  winner. Robin on the bike and kayak section.

2010 was   his 5th attempt at the  coveted  Speights Coast to Coast medal.

In February 2010 Robin finished  the two day Coast to Coast   for the 5th time ,  in  14 1/2 hours,  leaving Kamura beach at 6am, biking 200 km  and running around the Goat Pass Road and not over it, and not kayaking the Waimaku Gorge but the Avon river in Christchurch ( it's just not the same is it!!). As the course was changed  at the last minute  due to rain in the West Coast.

The attempt was harrowing but at least he wasn't last!!  He's very proud to say he won the Robin Oakley section but it's not about winning, it's about finishing!! At least it wasn't  too dark when he came into Sumner Beach  at 8.30pm, amidst cheering and yahooing from the family and supporters.

Robin had a great big smile on his face and was very proud of his efforts. Well done to Robin and  to the support crew for all their hard work, Barry ,Laura and Claire, Shirleen and girls ( cheerleaders). Look out for news of the 2011 Coast to Coast.

Robin also finished the  ''Le race'' bike race  last  year in March  from Chch to Akaroa ,  and the McLeans Isld  mountain bike relay  race in October 2010,  look out for further information on other races he's entering. (Motatapu bike race in 2011).

ROBIN'S  40th BIRTHDAY

In April Robin Oakley  turned 40 so he  organised a '' ROBIN'S RACE TO 40'' , which was an  AMAZING RACE around Christchurch.

This involved lots of car mystery adventure  ,  finding treasure, solving clues, and  a scavanger hunt about town. The after match function was in town and was  a fun night with prize giving and partying.

Congratulations  and Happy 40th Birthday Robin !!!

ABOVE, Winners on the day were, left, TEAM CRANNY Wendy, Jason and Andrew, middle  , Robin and his family on the night of the party.

Right, Has anyone found Peter the  Party Pumpkin? Recently seen in and around the city on  the day of the Amazing race, April 24th, at the airport, Harewood and along the causeway to Redcliffs

THE AMAZING RACE took place on a  wet Christchurch day, April 24th, to celebrate the  auspicious occasion of Robin’s 40th birthday. Race goers drove around the city like idiots finding: clues, buried treasure, collecting bits and pieces and getting wet!  All generally having a great time. Well done to those who entered, we had an impressive 21 car loads of participants. Winners on the day were given their very posh trophy at the after party, seen below. We finished  our  busy but outrageously fun day at  a big  after party  and gathered to celebrate the coming of age of Robin. Happy 40th birthday Robin.
